Preventing Disaster
It is important to note a distinct difference between DATA RECOVERY and DATA TRANSFER, which are two VERY DIFFERENT and commonly confused processes that are explained in the two sections that follow.
Having a good understanding of both, along with the importance of maintaining DAILY BACKUPS of your personal data is VITAL in preventing disaster and we can also assist in designing a suitable backup system.
Data Recovery
DATA RECOVERY is the more involved of the two processes and is typically caused by an accidental formatting of the drive, a total crash of the system, or when the physical drive simply gives up and dies. The chances of recovering your data in any of these scenarios are generally pretty good, provided it has NOT been tampered with by an un-trained professional and it is immediately brought in for a proper evaluation.
DATA RECOVERY - OPTION ONE - For clients with typical data recovery needs, we offer a less expensive (in house) approach that employs industry standard hardware and software techniques.
The required skills and proper tools to perform the attempt are quite time intensive and the final outcome can seldom be pre-determined until the effort has actually been made. Fees could be higher for clients with special needs, which would depend upon project requirements and discussed when the drive is brought in.
Our standard fee for attempting an (in house) data recovery is $85 per drive.
DATA RECOVERY - OPTION TWO - Sourceport Computing can also provide free written quotes from the industry leaders at DriveSavers Data Recovery if it has been determined to be in the client's best interest.
The good news is that most people have a readable drive and do not need DATA RECOVERY services, but (instead) require DATA TRANSFER services, which is commonly misunderstood and explained below.
Data Transfer
DATA TRANSFER differs from DATA RECOVERY in that it involves the process of searching a drive that is both running and readable for data that can be extracted to an alternate form of media (such as: another physical drive), thereby allowing the original drive to be fully repaired without risking damage or loss of the data, which will later need to be imported back to the original drive after repairs are complete.
This also facilitates the process of scanning the data for possible infections that can be more easily removed on another machine while the client machine is being repaired and/or upgraded and reduces the risk of re-infecting the client machine when the data is later restored.
Client's are also advised that if they are running any financial software (such as: Quicken) on their machine, that they will need to export their data to a file folder on the drive and provide us with any passwords we may need for all aspects of performing the job PRIOR to requesting data transfer service.
Our standard fee for performing a data transfer is $40 per drive.
$20 PER ADDITIONAL PROFILE - IF ANY - ON THE SAME DRIVE
